Frequently Asked Questions

What is ClearUP

ClearUP is a small, non-invasive bioelectronic handheld device. ClearUP provides drug-free treatment through precise, targeted relief that you control and works with your body’s natural pathways to reduce symptoms of sinus and nasal inflammation. The device is reusable and rechargeable.

Tivic ClearUP is an alternative to pharmaceuticals to alleviate symptoms of inflammatory sinus conditions without pills, drowsiness, or other medication side effects. No mess, no spray, no flush, and can be used as often as you want (the more you use, the more consistent the relief).

ClearUP detects optimal treatment points and applies gentle bioelectronic currents to help reduce symptoms of inflammation, such as congestion, sinus pain, sinus pressure, and sinus headache. ClearUP works with the body’s natural pathways to directly target pain at the source. One treatment can provide relief for up to 6 hours!

ClearUP is FDA approved and clinically proven.
Bioelectronic medicine uses device technology in conjunction with the body's own nerve pathways to help mitigate symptoms of inflammation and underlying causes of disease.

Bioelectronic medicine has compelling advantages over traditional drug-based interventions. Benefits of bioelectronic therapuetics include better diagnosis and prevention, precision targeting, personalization, and real-time optimization, which are a few factors that support the case for the field’s growth potential.
Microcurrent is a safe and effective delivery of low-level electrical stimulation. Similar approaches have been used for decades by healthcare providers in implantable devices such as deep brain stimulators, pacemakers, and spinal cord stimulators. ClearUP is the first bioelectronic sinus device to use non-invasive microcurrent to relieve symptoms of inflammation such as sinus pain, sinus pressure, sinus headaches, and congestion.
ClearUP emits a proprietary stimulation that has been developed specifically to reduce sinus pain and congestion, whereas other microcurrent devices have different stimulation parameters.
ClearUP is Tivic's first over-the-counter product. We are exploring the impact of bioelectronic therapy for other indications. See our Product Pipeline

Usage

The Tivic ClearUP device is intended to be used for adults 18+ years who have symptoms of nasal and sinus inflammation such as sinus pain, sinus pressure, sinus headaches, and congestion due to cold, flu, and allergies. It also can be helpful to those who have trouble breathing through their nose during exercise, trouble falling asleep, or those who have medication restrictions.
ClearUP has been clinically validated for safety and effectiveness with users 18 and older. ClearUP must be self-administered and cannot be applied to another person. This is due to the electrical circuit design. The hand holding the device completes the electrical circuit so a parent can not apply to a child. Please only use as directed.
To use ClearUP, fully charge the device before first use.

1. Turn the device on and select the Comfort Level you desire. We recommend starting your first treatment at Level 1 and changing at your preference. The difference in Comfort Levels does not impact effectiveness.

2. Start on the outside of your cheekbone. Place the metal tip on your face using mild pressure. Glide the tip very slowly inward along the cheek toward the nose. Stop gliding when unit vibrates. Do not lift the metal tip off of the face when gliding. Make sure your fingers are in contact with the metal plating on the device.

Hold the tip on the treatment point until the vibration stops. The device then transmits microcurrent to this point. After a few seconds ClearUP will stop vibrating, prompting you to resume gliding it along the designated areas.

It is normal for treatment points to vary between each person, and even each treatment. (See Treatment Point FAQ).

3. Repeat.Treat both sides of the face and then concentrate on areas of pain.

Please refer to our 'How To' video and full User's Guide and Quick Start Guide.
For best results, use the device consistently 2-4 times a day for 2-4 weeks, followed by use as needed for symptoms. While some users feel instant relief, our clinical studies showed maximum benefits with extended use. One treatment can provide up to 6 hours of relief.
We have not studied use of the device for treatments longer than 5 minutes at a time. Please use as directed.
We recommend using the device as directed within our User Guide and Quick Start Guide.

ClearUP has only been studied when applied to the cheek, nose, and browbone area. The recommended treatment area and frequency was used in our clinical trials, is FDA approved, and has been deemed safe and effective.
The vibration of the device indicates that it is detecting an area where it can efficiently target nerve fibers and alleviate symptoms of inflammation. However, it's important to note that this vibration doesn't necessarily indicate areas of notable congestion or pain.

It is normal for the number of treatment points to vary (areas/frequency) for each person, and even from one treatment to the next. Treat the entire sinus area as directed for 5 minutes, and then focus on specific sinus areas where you experience the most discomfort.
While ClearUP may detect treatment points in other areas, this is due to the device detecting where it can easily pass microcurrent through the skin. However, ClearUP is only FDA approved for treatments in the sinus area. Please follow the instructions in the User Guide/Quick Start Guide and only use as directed.
ClearUP is intended to treat symptoms of nasal and sinus inflammation including congestion, sinus pain, sinus headaches, and sinus pressure.
ClearUP has been shown to be clinically effective for treating congestion and can help with your symptoms even if you do not suffer from sinus pain.
ClearUP is powered by a lithium battery, which is rechargeable using the accompanying USB-C charger. It's important to only use the USB-C charger provided.
You should charge the device prior to first use and as necessary thereafter. With regular use, a single charge can typically last 1-3 weeks. ClearUP will be disabled while it's charging. Be sure to use only the charger that came with the device packaging. Other chargers are not authorized and may damage the device. If you ever misplace your charger, you can find a replacement charger here.

The device will indicate it needs to be charged when the battery light blinks orange. It will slowly blink green during charging, and become solid green once fully charged. Please see the User's Guide for full charging instructions.
